2012 Winter

Greeting to all AVVA Chapters of Oregon.

Well folks you missed one heck a good council meeting in Lebanon the past 2 Saturday ago (01-23-10). VVA 585 Mid Valley Chapter sponsored the State Council meeting. Allot of good topics presented during the first meeting of the year. (I will recap some of the meetings contents a little later in this report.)

A local Native American organization cooked up some traditional dishes of the Choctow people and I am telling you it was tasty! I want to thank the ladies of the "Crowfoot All Nations Women's Circle," It was an outstanding treat. Thank you Kiamichi, ladies and gentlemen who were involved in the catering of that meal.

On to the AVVA side of this meeting. The meeting started off at 0900 hrs. and we covered the following topics;

*To Corporate or to not Corporate? There are new rules and regulations pertaining to incorporating.

*Veteran Service Officer, what is required. There has not been a finalization for this function (VSO) so watch for the standards and requirements in the future please.

*Communications amongst State Chapters, the importance. Working on it!

*Chapters Growth-Networking with other Veteran groups. Working on it!

*Upcoming events all Chapters/discussion. (State Council in Newport and Loyalty Days.) May 1, 2010 Newport, Oregon. You need to be there for reading of the names, very somber moment.

*Recruiting members for Chapter growth. The weekend of the meeting AVVA 585 retained 3 members, rolled a VVA membership (lifetime) to the wife of a deceased Veteran, signed up 2 more members. Good weekend!

*Suicide Prevention. I will add an attachment for information to all that are interested. Oregon has suffered over 1000 suicides by our Veterans after they have returned or separated from Active duty. We as an organization can do more!

*Project ideas? One good example of a project is setting up a food bank for Soldiers through Oregon National Guard in Grants Pass. The returning Service members and there families can still use assistance. Eula Arnaud Chapter 795 is the driving force for this project. She is also getting together with organizations to start another food bank up in Medford. Thank you Chapter 795!

*Discussed possible Veterans home in Linn County-250 beds. In the works! This would be great we need more!

*Blanket presentation and our desired routes of distribution, mentioned Crafters involved in the project. Twelve blankets (lap) went to Roseburg with Mrs. Frances Rowan Region 8 Director and I believe fifteen, maybe more went with Mr. Tom Owens and his wife Nadine to Portland. This capped off a great project. I want to thank the ladies who worked this out, Nadine, Ellen, Bobbi and Chapter 585 Mid-Valley Chapter 585 for the 200 dollar donation to accomplish this project.

*Kias award of excellence. Kia is a Native American, Choctaw Nation. She is also an Air Force veteran, AVVA 585 member and one great Lady. I presented her with a beaded "prayer feather." This is a significant event and her love for us was humbling...she knows how to cook some yummy grub!

This is a recap of of the State council meeting for AVVA. Our Topics mirrored the VVA topics. I am providing attachments to this message and I hope this will help provide information for your chapters and members.
